Project Title: Kids helping Kids—crochet a blanket for a resident of Wood's Homes

Description: Students will learn to crochet a medium size blanket using the single crochet stitch and then donate the completed project to Wood's Homes. Students will increase numeracy and literacy skills by following a pattern to complete the blanket (through the learning of creating a slip knot, chain stitch and single crochet).
Estimated time: 20 hours Grade 9

Patterns and Relations: General Outcome: Use patterns to describe the world and to solve
problems.
Driving Question: How can a young person help out another young person who no longer has a home?What can you make for another youth less fortunate than yourself?
Scenario: A close friend had a big fight with his/her parents and the parents told the youth to leave. The youth ends up at Wood's Homes. You want to help out your friend somehow. You decide to crochet a blanket, to let your friend know that you care and to help keep him/her warm.

Safety and/or Environmental concerns: Safety demonstrations for sharp objects (scissors, needles etc.). Posture and repetitive strain injury prevention.
Facility Type: flat top desks or tables with chairs, regular classroom (storage area too).
Equipment and/or Comsumables: 10cm crochet hook, 3-750gm skiens 'chuncky' yarn, blunt end darning needle, scissors. Computer, hand held digital and projection device. Medium size plastic storage device for project.
Student Reflection Materials: Hand held devise with notes app or individual journal. 3-2-1 reflections, KWLs,
